Do not tamper with farmlands belonging to IDPs – Gov Ishaku warns monarchs

Traditional rulers in Taraba State have been warned to desist from confiscating farmlands belonging to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.

Governor Darius Ishaku, who gave the warning at the ongoing reconciliation process between herders and farmers in both Bali and Gassol councils.

He said his administration would not hesitate to visit any monarch caught indulging in such acts with the long arm of the law.

Chairmen of the two councils who made the governor’s position known said a directive has been issued to monarchs from the two councils that have in recent times been enmeshed in herders, farmers clashes, a situation that has led to wanton destruction of lives and property.

The duo who spoke with DAILY POST on telephone shortly after the reconciliation meeting vowed to disseminate the governor’s directives to the appropriate quarters in their various councils.

Describing the governor’s directive as part of the peace initiative between the Tiv farmers and the Fulani herdsmen who have been at loggerheads with each other, the peace process, according to them have begun to yield positive results as some of the displaced persons have started returning to their homes.

Optimistic that the peace initiative will yield the much desired results, they said “there is a standing directive from our governor to all the traditional rulers and village heads of the two local government areas that none of them should temper with land belonging to those who fled their home following the recent crisis .”

”Who so ever flouts the governor’s directive will be made to face the music, they warned.

The chairmen also confirmed that they have collectively urged all displaced persons whose lands have been trespassed upon to voice out by reporting to the councils boss.

Musa Abdullahi, the council of Gassol and his counterpart from Bali, Kallamu Mahmood said “we have both resolved to assist the governor in achieving permanent peace in our councils and the state at large”.

Some displaced persons who bared their minds to DAILY POST said if the government would stand by its directive, the incessant upheavals between herders and farmers, would soon be a thing of the past.
